Few images of American history pose pure masculinity like the cowboy. His rugged, heroic bravery stood tall in the saddle as he headed across dangerous territory facing nature’s sprawling, treeless plains and humanity’s outlaws. He donned a cowboy hat, spurs, and boots proudly laced with both humility and a sense of arrogance.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

    So MANY favorites.

“The old man was right.” (Magnificent 7)
“Generosity. That was my first mistake.” (Magnificent 7 again)
“And Hell’s coming with me.” (Tombstone)

So many great westers, so little time!

My family and I are always saying “Shane. Shane. Shane. Come back Shane” 🙂

“I had never really known who John Dunbar was. Perhaps because the name itself had no meaning. But as I heard my Sioux name being called over and over, I knew for the first time who I really was.” and John Dunbar: “The strangeness of this life cannot be measured: in trying to produce my own death, I was elevated to the status of a living hero. ” Both from Dances With Wolves, one of my favorite movies!

“Little Big Man” starring Dustin Hoffman comes to mind as my favorite western. Then Clint Eastwood in “Unforgiven” was so unique it blurred the lines between “good guys” as “bad guys”. John Wayne’s westerns were all stereotypes of Hollywood’s portrayal of a “hard as nails” cowboy. I always loved Charles Bronson playing Apache roles in westerns.

I LOVE Western movies in general… I love the Clint Eastwood movies(The Good, the Bad and the Ugly/Hang ’em High/A fist full of Dollars, and so on) – I love “Once upon a time in the West” – but my favorite Cowboy of all times is still Henry Fonda: Strong, Fast, Charismatic – and handsome. 😉
