Free Write Friday #7: Abandoned

on October 26, 2012

FreeWriteFridayBadgeKellie’s back! In the midst of the chaos in her life over the last month (or so), and the MIA of FWF, Kellie feels the word desinated below would be perfectly suited for the returning prompt. For those who do not know the events leading up to this week’s prompt, here is a little blurb from Kellie’s blogpost on September 28, 2012:

After the lab tested the materials in our home believed to be asbestos, seems the contractor was mistaken. It tested negative! After five long days away from home, I’m happy to say we will be moving back over the weekend and continuing our remodeling!

Glad to have you back, Kellie♥

Here is the FWF prompt:

a·ban·doned/əˈbandənd

Adjective:
  1. (of a person) Having been deserted or cast off.
  2. (of a building or vehicle) Remaining empty or unused; having been left for good.

Here is my contribution:

Picket Fences

The home place is visible in the distance

Fully laden pecan trees line the driveway

The front porch is in dire need of repair

And the picket fence guards the entrance way

Sounds of laughter, children playing can still be heard

“Don’t leave the backyard,” echoes the wind

As visions of scampering little feet

Turn them quickly around again

Gardens of rose buds, camellias in full bloom

Need nurturing and lots of care

Weeds have grown all round the fence

But sweet aromas linger in the air

Remembrances of family gatherings

Held dear and close to the heart

Are renewed with a walk along the fence line

Remaining very clear until time to depart

Smiles from within follow the picket fence

Along the perimeter of the yard

Securing home and gardens

Like an ol’ soldier standing guard

    SOLITUDE

wonderful imagery in this lovely poem!

  4. Lovely word picture, and so nostalgic… makes one long for that gentler, cleaner quieter world, no TV, Cars, aeroplanes, spraying , cell phones… just as long as they were kind to the horses!

It definitely was a much different time back then…I remember visiting my grandmother. No picket fence but the house had a wrap around porch which invited all to linger while rocking in one of the chairs. The best response to this poem, however, came from my mother. She read the poem for the first time in the book Remembering. She looked up with tears in her eyes as she said, “This reminds me of my home place. You never saw it because Papa and Mama both died before you were born.” There is sweet but sad story surrounding their deaths. *sigh* I had never heard my mom describe or speak of the house where she was born and lived as a child. Her tears brought on my tears and we cried together. Oh, how I miss her…oops! Beginning to get teary eyed……….

  5. Very nice, Sharla. Lots of visuals to this one.
Similar to mine, which I wrote while driving the backroads of Texas in 1998. I was doing research for my first novel, and saw many houses like the ones we describe.

Ahem! Actually it is one I had previously written and published in an earlier book. Most of my contributions have been free writes but this one just hit me as needing to be shared. Thank you for stopping by for some catnip:>)

Your words are so very beautiful Sharla, so very moving, poignant with memories not quite forgotten, lovely to read. Penny xx

Thank you, Penny. This one has special sentiment because the first time my mother read it she cried. It brought back memories of her home as a child, a place I had never seen.

  9. Love the imagery and the sentiment–there’s appeal for all the senses!
