Free Write Friday #23: Keepsakes

FreeWriteFridayBadge

********************************

Kellie Elmore is nostalgic this Friday challenging writers to examine none other than…

********************************

Keepsakes

keepsake locket

Attic nooks, garage floors, closet corners
Full of clutter

Crates and cartons, cardboard boxes, packages and parcels
Nothing but junk

Paper sacks, bags and bundles, stacks and piles
Ready for the trash

Shoe boxes, jewelry cases, and plastic containers
Overflowing with treasure

Clutter, junk, trash, and treasure
My, oh, my how the time has flown
All personal collections, priceless beyond measure

Keepsakes renew old memories
I think I will just leave them alone
And go bake some brownies

Confession: I must confess this poem is from my book Echoes. With my husband’s illness and recent release from the hospital, my mind just wasn’t up to a new write today. Even though he is home, there are still many hurdles to cross. Kellie’s theme this week actually focuses on that one special something cherished beyond measure. However, when I saw the theme key word, I knew the one I needed to share.

Am I forgiven since I confessed? Hugs!

Now I am off to see what others have written…

Free Write Friday #22: Time & Place Prompt

Welcome back to Free Write Friday! If you are new here, feel free to read the intro. FreeWriteFridayBadgeOtherwise, let’s get started.

Here is your FWF prompt…

Elevator

Time & Place:

You find yourself in an elevator. The door closes and you see only five buttons. A sign hangs above them that reads: “Find Happiness.” Each button is a different color. Red, blue, green, orange and yellow. There are no other instructions and you must push one to get the elevator to move. Which color do you choose and why? Where does it take you?

Here is my story…

Up at 5a.m., getting ready for work and kids ready for school, packing lunches, chasing a piece of dry toast with a glass of OJ and I am out the door. The ‘hustle and bustle’ of the city streets is already in full force and my mind is spinning as I fight the horrid traffic. Not even at work yet and stress already has me in its clutches. Oh, what I would give for a day, just a day away from it all.

Finding a parking place is just as horrendous as the traffic. I ride ’round and ’round to no avail and end up parking in boo-foo as usual. Arr-r-r-rgh! Now it is beginning to sprinkle rain, I have on my high heels so no chance of running. I look toward the back seat and at least my ‘what’s left of it’ umbrella is there. It took a tumble in the wind a few days earlier but flimsy as it is it is still better than nothing.

I make it to the building without becoming totally drenched, shake my umbrella, gather my composure and walk toward the elevator. Something appears strange though. While the noise of the streets reverberates constantly on the outside, there is a sense of calm inside the building. No one is in sight. That is unusual, in fact, eerie. I glance at my watch, day and time, to be sure I hadn’t totally gone off the deep end and sent my kids to school on a Saturday. Nope! Today is Friday. A holiday? Nope! Those are celebrated on Mondays. Did I miss the retreat? Are you kidding? Boss would have us working overtime to brainstorm before allowing a day off for a retreat.

I approach the elevator and push the up button. A few seconds later the door opens. I step inside and the door immediately closes. I expect to push 7 for the seventh floor but there are only five buttons. What the heck? Am I in the Twilight Zone? No one was around to step into the elevator with me so realization set in that I am perfectly alone. I slap my face to see if I am dreaming. OUCH! Nope! Very much awake. At that point, I take a closer look at the buttons – definitely only five but not numbered.  Each button is a different color. Red, blue, green, orange and yellow. That’s when I notice the sign: “Find Happiness.”

By this time, I knew I had gone completely nuts. Stress factor was on overload and I was entering meltdown. If I am dreaming, I might as well make this dream as pleasant as possible. Why not? It’s MY dream! Okay, let’s look at those buttons and think about the sign “Find Happiness.”

Red is first. Red symbolizes fiery heat and warmth, action, courage, vim and vigor so to speak. Right now I feel ‘red’ enough, not up to any more activity and my courage is at a all-time low so I’ll move on to the second choice, blue, which happens to be my favorite color. Blue is the color of the sky, ocean, sleep, twilight symbolizing serenity. Blue is the calming color. Right now I am thinking I should push Blue and get the elevator moving for I could definitely use some calming down right now. Well, not so fast. Green is next, the color of nature, life, richness and has been designated the most restful color. Um-m-m? Another thought…do you suppose a bag of greenbacks is waiting upon my arrival should I choose this button? Nah! Move on to orange…the epitome of the warmth of the sun. With my fair complexion, I stay out of direct sunlight for fear of freckles. Better leave this one alone in case the elevator door opens onto a sunny beach. Well, I am here alone so why not let my imagination run rampant? Remember, the green made me think of a that bag full of greenbacks. One more. The last one is yellow, my second favorite, bright and cheerful. The yellow daisy is my favorite flower and I can envision the door opening onto a field of daisies where I can take off my shoes and chase the butterflies. Man, am I weird!

Alright already! I need to get moving so a decision has to be made. But what IS the meaning behind each of the buttons? Are my thoughts being monitored and serving as guideposts toward something mysterious laying in wait? The sign does say “Find Happiness.” Is this merely a means to let me know I need to slow down and really look at my life? Am I happy? This is definitely Twilight Zone material.

I lift my hand, slowly reach outward and push the Yellow button. Why yellow? I can think of reasons why or why not for each one of the colors. You would think my choice would automatically be blue since that is my favorite. This time I am going with number 5. Yellow is the fifth button and while blue may be my favorite color, my number is 5. Anyway, yellow is a happy color. Thus, “Find Happiness” must be found in the yellow zone, rather than blue of the twilight zone.

The elevator slowly rises. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ding! Door opens.

“Sweetie, wake up! Are you okay? Usually you have already had your shower by now. When you did not come downstairs, I got worried. Now, I am surprised to find you still in bed.”

“Is it you?” I reach out and touch the face of my loving husband with the oh-so worried look on his face. “I had the strangest dream. Yet, it seemed so real.”

“Well, you better hurry up or you will not make it to work on time. Kids are ready so you don’t have that to contend with this morning. See you in a few.” After a swift kiss on the nose, I am left alone to ponder the happenings of my dream as I shower and dress for work.

Once ready, I grab my purse, smile to myself and head to the kitchen. I had only one foot in the doorway to the kitchen when I heard, “SURPRISE!” There in front of me was nothing but solid happiness. My husband, our kids, two cats and a vase full of bright, sunny, yellow daisies. And of course, smiles from everyone with thoughts that transpired “Just because we love you!”

Free Write Friday #20: Lyric Prompt

free-write-friday-kellie-elmore

Free Write Friday (FWF) lyric prompt…

“Oh yea, they say ‘life goes on’ long after the thrill of living is gone.”

This is one of Kellie’s favorite Mellancamp songs, Jack and Diane, that she says leaves her pining for those long lost summers of youth and wishing she hadn’t been in such a hurry.

What does this lyric mean to you?

Thrill

When I was a child
Thrills were in toys
Barbie dolls, Play-Doh
Anything but boys

Later as a teen
Thrills ran with friends
Drive-ins, roller skates
The rouse a kiss sends

Summers came and went
Thrills gone too fast
Boys, boys, boys
None that would last

As a young adult
Thrills & chills hit the scene
Fast cars, night clubs
Anything in between

Summers still came
Thrills led abroad
Oceans of pleasure
Applaud, applaud

Then came thirties
Thrills took a turn
Heartache after heartache
Made the heart yearn

Finally one summer
Thrill of it all
Set my heart afire
My soulmate’s call

Ah! But forties
Thrills at their best
Children of my own
Those were life’s test

Summers came and went
Thrills beyond measure
Swimming, playing in the sun
Search for life’s treasure

The nifty fifties
Thrills beyond compare
Kids grown and gone
Much music in the air

Summers brought joy
Thrills forever after
Wedding bells rang
Grandbabies thereafter

Sixties are here
Thrills still abound
Two cats, a bird
One funny hound

With each day
Life quickly marches on
New sights, new sounds
Long after thrills are gone

Welcome back to FWF. If you are new here, feel free to read the intro. Otherwise, let’s get started.

Here is your prompt…

Credit: Richard Baxter

Credit: Richard Baxter

Here is my contribution. . .

After the Storm. . .

Like a memory
The home place
Was swept away
In an instant
A flash
Without warning
In a dash

Gone but not without hope

The structure
Tattered
The windows, doors
No more
Boards mere splinters
A roof without a floor

Yet still a feeling of hope

While no material
Will soon
Be left to see
I still have you
You still have me

There indeed lies hope

We can rebuild
Start anew
The image will fade
But we hold hands
In our old age

free-write-friday-kellie-elmoreWelcome to another Free Write Friday! Today Kellie Elmore’s challenge is . . .

Word Bank: Opal, Vague, Whirl, Dream, Sheer, Conjure, Bare, Allure

With Valentine’s Day only a short time away, emotions of love and the beauty of the opal gemstone just seem to go hand-in-hand. So, thank you Kellie for your latest challenge and hopefully I live up to your expectations.

The Opal…

A gemstone of rare beauty
Alluring to the naked eye
Never vague, always unique
This surely one cannot deny

Colors of the spectrum
Whirl and twirl in the light
Conjuring bare opalescence
A dream of sheer delight

My Love…

Precious and rare in beauty
The opal of my eye
Never wispy, always strong
This no one can deny

Poignant emotions
Dance and cry with joy
Bare opalescent smiles
Readily you deploy

Happy pre-Valentine’s Day!

Free Write Friday #16: What does Freedom mean to you?

fwf-specialThis week Kellie Elmore welcomes Jessica Kristie to this special edition of FWF. Jessica is an award winning author, an advocate for art, and an activist against human trafficking. Read more HERE

Now for the Free Write Friday Prompt…

What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom: the only entity that does not carry a price tag but comes at a high price

FreeWhen I first saw the prompt for Kellie’s Free Write this week, different words immediately popped into my head, such as liberty, justice, joy, happiness, dancing, singing, worshiping. So, these thoughts led me to examine the letters that make up the word, much like I remember doing in high school. Of course, back then the chosen words were more flippant and rarely truly serious. It was a game. It was simply for fun and a time of laughter. Here are my thoughts today on the word freedom:

Free will

Right to act, speak, or think

Escape from tyranny

Equal opportunity

Doing without restriction

Ongoing liberty

Making choices

All of this seems reasonable, inherent and natural. Why? If you are born in America, there is no need to question why. BUT, if not, then that’s a different story. Most of us here in America have no clue what it is like to live in a non-free society. We hear about such places, read stories of people forced into slavery, and watch TV or movies that depict the hatred and cruelty surrounding those living in countries that offer no civil or political rights. You are told what to do; you do it: no question! It doesn’t matter whether you LIKE it or not…you have no choice, no voice!

I suppose what gnaws at me the most is the passiveness by which America takes her freedom(s). How much does the average citizen know about the establishment of America as a free nation? Was it magic? POOF! America is free! I am free-e-e-e-e! NO! There was absolutely no magic involved. Sacrifice…the ultimate sacrifice is the price paid for freedom!

Being an educator, my mind reverts back to a recent experience. I work with teachers in an online environment. Those wishing to obtain their Florida Reading Endorsement on their teaching certificate must teach a lesson in the classroom and submit it for evaluation. That’s where I come in. I am the facilitator/evaluator. It is my decision (choice) as to whether they pass or not. Of course, that decision is based on stringent state criteria. It is not just me as one person saying “you pass, ” “you don’t.” It is not a dictatorship. At the same time, each teacher has been given the opportunity to enhance his/her education, no boundaries regarding race or religion. lt is not a case of “only men can be educated,” “women are subjugated.”

It was during one of the video presentations that a total enlightenment occurred and it came from a class of fourth graders. The topic of discussion included questions/answers where events were being recalled which led up to the penning of The Star Spangled Banner by Frances Scott Key. In 1814, Key was inspired by the American victory and the sight of the large American flag flying triumphantly above Fort McHenry, Maryland. Here is a brief excerpt from the video:

Teacher: Do you think things were better back in the day than they are today? Do you think people were more patriotic back then than they are today? Do you think people were more honored?

Students: Overwhelmingly the response to each question was “yes” by the students.

Teacher: Why would you say “yes?”

Students: Back then they got away from England because of taxes. They became free and glad to be their own people (pause) with independence. Now that time has passed we are used to being free.

Teacher: So, today we expect it, instead of appreciate it?

Students: Overwhelmingly the response was “yes“ from the students.

Did your thoughts coincide with the responses from the fourth graders? Were you surprised at the outcome? Is that true of America today? Are her freedoms, liberty and justice simply being taken for granted, totally expected, but not truly appreciated with consideration of the sacrifices made by our forefathers and still being made today? Think about it!

What does freedom mean to me? It means hope, faith and courage; it means honor and respect; it means standing up for what I believe in; it means I have a choice, I have a voice! I have the right to make that choice regardless of the situation, I have the right for my voice to echo the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, a silent prayer/a verbal prayer, a tribute to our military, and so much more.

For America to remain free, it should not be the government telling me or anyone else what to do or not to do, it should be the people telling the government what needs to be done, working together, united for the common cause! There indeed lies freedom!

ALWAYS REMEMBER…

AND JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT THAT WAS ALL

TO ME FREEDOM IS…

What Does Freedom Mean to You from Abhishek Shah
FREEDOM IS OPPORTUNITY TO BE AND DO THE BEST YOU CAN!

Free Write Friday #15: Time and Place

FreeWriteFridayBadgeWelcome to Kellie Elmore’s Free Write Friday! If you are new here, please feel free to read the intro. Otherwise, let’s get started.

This week’s FWF prompt is a time and place scenario:

You are in the woods and you stumble across a tin box sticking up out of the ground.
You dig it up to find…

????????????????????????????

If you would like to join in on the challenge, here are the things to remember:

  • Post entry on your blog.
  • Comment this post with your link.
  • No deadline. No word limit.
  • Be kind and comment others.
  • Use #FWF hashtag on Twitter.

Just you and me, we thought!

BoyandGirl

A walk in the woods
hand in hand
kicking up leaves
like they were sand

Ouch! That hurt!
toes quickly rebound
something metal
buried in the ground

Let’s see! Let’s see!
what’s your pleasure?
we’ll surely share
if a treasure

Carefully lifting
a corner exposed
my favorite lunch box
right under my nose

How did it get here?
this just can’t be
then a rustle
from a nearby tree

We turned
together in time
just as my brother
begin to chime

Gotcha! Gotcha!
but surprise ain’t over
look inside
it’s not stinking clover

Laughter reigned
heartily as can be
peanut butter and jelly
a picnic for us three

Free Write Friday #14: Resolve

fwf logo

Welcome back to Kellie Elmore‘s Free Write Friday! If you are new here, feel free to read the intro, otherwise let’s get started…

This week, our FWF prompt is:

resolve_quotes

I resolve…

to not make any resolutions this year
that are not
manageable
doable or
easily attainable!

Every year I
manage to list
resolutions
to never
take a moment’s
time to revisit

Why?

They are unmanageable
Too many

They are not doable
Too demanding

They are not easily attainable
Too farfetched

So, why make them?

To impress others?
To say I have them?
To hope!

Resolve, resolute, resolution
Any way you look at it
It is hope

I hope for determination
To follow through
Should I decide to resolve

Thank you, Kellie, for another great challenge!

Free Write Friday #13: Image Prompt

FreeWriteFridayBadge

Here we are again on yet another Friday and Kellie Elmore has challenged us to a free write with an image prompt. If this is your first encounter with Free Write Friday, feel free to read the intro on Kellie’s website.

In short, here is what is expected. . .

Do not think. Do not edit. Do not pay attention to spelling, punctuation or form. Just allow the moment, your feelings, your imagination to run free and…

Do not stop until you find yourself forcing your words or trying too hard to complete a thought.

BirdinRain

Pounding Rain

*****************

With head bowed
I feel the rain
Pounding, pounding
But I feel no pain

In spite of cold
I will survive
It’s my life
I decide

To live, to die
To watch, to wait
To live, to live
It’s not too late

Only refreshing
Cleansing desires
Snuffing out
Emotional fires

Soon it will end
But I shall remain
Lifting my head high
With joy, without pain

Free Write Friday #12: Word Bank

Today has been a day of agony. . .a day of grief. . .a day without warning. For Kellie Elmore’s Free Write Friday this week, she has chosen a word bank that without hesitation reflects on the horrific events of this day.

WordBank

bewitched – agony – awe – dismay – jaded – enamored – sacred – nirvana – fury

Feelings & Emotions

bth_dividers

The agony felt today
Is in no way easily expressed
Lives of innocent children taken
Left families torn and distressed

Is life no longer sacred?
Are we no longer impressed
By life’s awe and glory
Instead lonely and depressed?

A day etched with dismay
Forbids whispers of nirvana
Unwanted raging tears
Abandon joyful persona

Life’s jaded texture
Neither bewitched nor enamored
Resolved destiny’s fury
On a day forever remembered

Candle for Connecticut. In Memory.

It only takes a split second, a fleeting moment for lives to be forever changed. Hold on to every second, cherish the moment, for all too quickly it shall pass. Got something to say, say it! Want to give someone a hug, give it! Need to pay someone a visit, do it! Do NOT hesitate!

My heart bleeds for the families, friends and loved ones of those whose lives were taken so abruptly in a moment of someone’s sheer madness. So many questions, so few answers for those whose lives have been shattered. Please hold them dear to your heart with prayer to offer comfort in this hour of such dire need.
