The Glass Winged Butterfly

on January 12, 2013

Greta_oto You can see through window panes, glass doors, shards of crystal, precious gems but have you ever thought about seeing clearly through a butterfly’s wings? Well, you can! The Glasswinged Butterfly (Greto oto) has translucent wings, very unique, very delicate. In other words, its wings become windows.

one thinks all has been seen
then a butterfly comes into view
a marvel of nature
you can see right through

clear through its wings
to the leaves or ground
wonders of nature
always abound

Very cool butterfly. I’m sure nature provided the translucent parts as the perfect camaflauge. It would be interesting if humans had the same.

I love butterflies but have never seen one that you could see through. What a remarkable thing that a catapillar who is, well to put it nicely , not a beauty, can morph into one of God’s loviest creatures.

    how long do they live?

    • catnipoflife says:

Most butterflies seem to have a life span of only a week or two but some have been known to live longer. One of the defenses of the glasswing is its transparency. Another is the taste of both the caterpillar and the butterfly due to where the egg was laid. The top speed for the glasswing is about 8 mph. All butterflies taste through their legs. They are used as an indicator of the quality of the habitat – if the glasswings start to die then something is wrong with the habitat.
